Building/structure dates: 1874 initial construction
Significance: Excellent example of small-town office row of late 19th century. Largely unaltered. The row was built to serve as law officers, and was conveniently located across the street from the county courthouse. Built by F.W.M. Holliday, Governor of Virginia from 1878-1884. / Lawyer's Row is a two-story brick office building that exemplifies the Victorian style in nineteenth century American architecture. It was erected in 1874 by Fred W.M. Holliday, a local lawyer who served as governor of Virginia, and it continues today to be used as office space. The row's significance is further increased because it is part of a town street facade in which most of the structures in the block are pre-1900 small office buildings. The block fronts on the county courthouse square and is an essential cultural, social, and visual element of the city.
