Significance: Constructed ca. 1850, the Pigeonniers of Lakeside Plantation represent a Creole adaptation in an Anglo-Italianate setting. These pigeonniers lie outside of the Creole tradition. Their placement is towards the rear, rather than to the front of the main house. The carpentry is Anglo-American in form. Yet, these buildings functioned as pigeonniers when they were first constructed. The original pigeon access holes and a few of the landing shelves survive. Later, the upper (nesting) floors were removed and the interiors were lined with planks up to six feet in height so that they could be used as corn cribs.
