Significance: From 1913 through 1915, the Chisana region between the Wrangell and Nutzolin Mountains drew miners from Alaska and Canada in search of gold. Beginning at McCarthy, prospectors followed two trails, the Goat Trail through Chitistone Gorge, and the Winter Trail flagged by George Hazelet across the Nizina and Chisana glaciers. Innkeepers operated roadhouses (R.H.) and the Alaska Road Commission built shelter cabins (S.C.) for the use of travelers. Solo Mountain Shelter Cabin, fifteen miles south of Chisana, is one of a string of cabins along the 78 mile Summer Trail. The routes were little used after the advent of airplane travel in the 1930's.
