Significance: At Vanderbilt Mansion, Frederick Vanderbilt created a country estate with a picturesque carriage drive system and bridges that both complemented and heightened the beauty of the natural landscape. One of a system of bridges constructed during the Vanderbilt period of ownership, the U.S. Route 9 Bridge was constructed to improve the appearance of the public road used to access the estate. The structure is significant as an example of early reinforced concrete arch construction, although it is clad in rustic stone to create a picturesque entrance to the estate. The bridge also represents Vanderbilt's philanthropic activities in the town of Hyde Park.
