Significance: Development of the Bryce Canyon National Park Rim Road was promoted in part by the Union Pacific Railroad as a component in their plan combining train and automobile travel to create a "tourist loop" between Cedar City, Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Bryce Canyon, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The road was created under guidelines developed cooperatively between the National Park Service and the Bureau of Public Roads in the 1920s and 1930s. The guidelines dictated aesthetic and practical standards for the design and construction of the roadway in an attempt to mitigate any negative impact on the natural features of that region.
