Significance: The bridge is the first reinforced-concrete arch span built in the U.S. using the Freyssinet method of arch decentering. In this technique, arch ribs are pre-stressed by hydraulic jacks placed at their crowns to compensate the deformation due to shrinkage of concrete, differential temperature changes, movement of supports, and elastic and plastic shortening. The result is that , in theory, supports, and elastic and plastic shortening...
