Significance: Olana was the home of Frederic Edwin Church, an important painter of the "Hudson River School," from 1860 when he moved into a small cottage on the estate until his death in 1900. The main house was built under Church's direction from 1870-1874. The studio wing was added 1888-1889, again under the artist's direction. In a very real sense the estate was never finished, for throughout his life Church was improving its visual effects. The estate's importance goes beyond the fact that it was the home of a famous painter: it is an environment - residence, landscapes, and farm - that has been preserved from the present virtually as Church designed it.
