Significance: Independence was founded in 1824 as Coles Settlement, renamed in 1836 to commemorate Texas' independence from Mexico. It was home to Sam Houston, the first president of the Republic of Texas, in the 1850s. Also the location of Baylor Colleges from 1845-57, the town was known as "The Athens of Texas." Samuel Seward moved his family to Texas from Illinois in 1832. He received a land grant for service in the Texas War of Independence, and his wife, Ann Stewart, made additional land purchases, totaling 1500 acres...
