Significance: The Mount Rainier National Park road system reflects its evolution from a primitive road providing access to Paradise Valley into a modern system of scenic highways and lesser access roads. The first roads were built by private individuals and mining concerns. Following the designation of the national park in 1899, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was assigned to the park and constructed the first major road. Subsequent roads were designed and built by the National Park Service and the Bureau of Public Roads. The park roads and road-related structures were carefully designed to harmonize with the park's outstanding natural scenery.
