Significance: Built between 1890 and 1895, the Littleton (Kingen) Round Barn was the first of many round barns to be built by Knightstown, Indiana, native Horace Duncan (1877-1928). Built for a wealthy Indianapolis lawyer, Frank L. Littleton, it exhibits roof framing details characteristic of Duncan's later works, which were patented by Duncan, Littleton ,and Isaac McNamee in 1905 (No. 804,427). It was designed to accommodate horses in the lower level with bulk hay storage in the level above (mow). A windmill was originally located atop the cupola, and was intended to pump water into a tank to be located high in the central scaffold. The tank was never installed, and the windmill blew down in 1901.
