Significance: the James S. Trimble House was built during the formation of Morrow County in the early 1850's. The large Italianate style house was constructed by William J. Miller. Mr. Miller was a prominent contractor in central Ohio who also built several county courthouses. The house was originally on a seven and 3/4 acre site. Other alterations include the front and side porches along with minor modifications to interior partitions. Significant attributes include the fact that it is a mature example of 19th century Italianate architecture, that it is one of the oldest remaining houses of this size in Mt. Gilead, and that it it thought to have been used during the Civil War for the Underground Railroad. Also the fact that the house and grounds remain virtually unchanged from their original state increases the historic importance.
