Significance: The Sacramento Water Treatment Plant Intake Pier and Access Bridge was constructed between 1921 and 1923 as a component of the Sacramento Water Filtration Plant. Designed in a Spanish Revival influenced style, the Intake Pier draws water from the Sacramento River and carries it through a conduit to the main complex of the plant, where the water is then purified. When first constructed the filtration plant was the most modern facility in the west and utilized a new technique in water purification known as sand filtration.
