Building/structure dates:
2000 initial construction
Significance: The Rex T. Barber Veterans Memorial Bridge was completed in 2000, bypassing the original vehicular bridge over the gorge, the Crooked River High Bridge (see HAER No. OR-35 for more information). The bridge is just upstream of the 1926 High Bridge and the 1911 Oregon Trunk Railroad Bridge (see HABS No. OR-169) for more railroad information). The bridge was designed by DGES Consulting Engineers in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Transportation Bridge Engineering Section. It features a central 410 reinforced concrete deck arch with open spandrel walls and prestressed reinforced concrete box girder approach spans. The bridge was constructed from the north and south walls of the canyon simultaneously, utilizing traveling formwork to create the arch ribs, which were cable stayed during construction until the closure pour had cured. The bridge was stained with a pigmented sealer following construction to allow the bridge to blend in with the surrounding high desert landscape. The bridge is significant in the Oregon context for its construction technique and as an important crossing of the Crooked River Gorge, a natural barrier to north-south transportation in the high desert region. The bridge was dedicated to Rex T. Barber in 2003, a prominent citizen from nearby Culver and a WW II Army Air Corps ace.
